It’s almost the end of the school year and all of Leo Baeck’s elementary school classes are preparing for it!
On Friday, May 8, we had a science fair at the Leo Baeck Elementary School. Students made a project about a topic that they had learned about in class: environment (1st grade), camouflage (2nd grade), electricity (3rd grade) water and the environment (4th grade), nutrition and geology (5th grade) and famous scientists (6th grade). My friend and I created a poster about the causes of obesity. During the Science Fair we looked at each other’s creative projects and completed a feedback form for our science teacher so that she could be sure that we read and understood each other’s projects.
On that same day we also had a ceremony in honor of the new classrooms that were built for next year’s fifth and sixth graders. We welcomed to the ceremony Rabbi Samuels, Lorry Lokey, Mr. Lokey’s granddaughter and other important guests. After all of the speeches were made they uncovered the donor plaque and Rabbi Samuels put up the new Mezuzah at the entrance to the event hall.
Sunday, June 14 to Saturday, June 20 was “The Hebrew Book Week”. Every grade learned about a different author or topic. We, the 5th graders, learned about the author Tami Shem-Tov who wrote the books “I’m Not a Thief”, “Just for Millie”, “Mati’s Orange Revolution” and many others. Our grade was divided into groups and we worked in stations. In one station, for example, the group had to write a poem or a short story based on one of Tami Shem-Tov’s book covers.
Every student needs to complete a feedback form about the school so that the school can improve for next year, and every class has a fun end-of-the-year activity. For the 6th graders it is their last year at the elementary school and therefore they have a big event including a performance in front of their parents. The 5th grade class activity will be on Friday, June 26th. It will be a guided tour of Haifa’s German Colony with a magician, followed by magic tricks. We are very excited!
