Ruth Almog, an English teacher in the Leo Baeck Junior and High Schools, was invited to attend a conference in Mannheim, Germany, on the theme “Solidarity and Diversity – a Challenge for the City?” that took place on October 9, 2015.
Ms. Almog participated in a panel discussion that included the Mayor of Mannheim, Dr. Peter Kurz, and the Mayor of Haifa, Yona Yahav. She spoke to the audience about Leo Baeck’s efforts to incorporate diversity in the school and the community. The conference, which took place at the Jewish Community Center, was organized by the Mannheim Municipality in honor of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Israel and Germany. Both cities – Mannheim and Haifa – are shaped by multicultural populations. The conference, therefore, addressed the challenges and opportunities of a multicultural society and how administrations deal and should deal with upcoming developments, especially in light of increasing refugee flows.
