Libby Barbakow z’l (1921-2018) was an ardent supporter of Israel in general and the Leo Baeck Education Center in particular. Living in a small town in West Virginia, she was introduced to Rabbi Robert Reuven Samuels z”l when he was a student rabbi at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio. He visited small West Virginia Jewish communities to lead services and inspire the youth group participants. Their ensuing family friendship would prevail for six decades. On her 80th birthday in 2001, Libby’s children surprised her by establishing a scholarship fund in her name at the Leo Baeck Education Center. Libby was thrilled and enjoyed the next 17 years of hearing about the individual students whose lives were enriched by attending Leo Baeck. Today, we continue to honor Libby with contributions to this fund so that more children can benefit from this enriched academic opportunity.
